Spate of burglaries
in Keyworth and around
During the last few weeks, there has been an increase in burglaries of both occupied and unoccupied homes in Keyworth and Stanton-on-the-Wolds. On several occasions, implements found in the garden or tools taken from insecure sheds have been used to force open doors or windows to gain access.
All residents should keep a watch on their own and neighbours' properties, especially if their neighbours are away on holiday. Please become actively involved, as the police need your help to apprehend those responsible for this spate of burglaries. Report any suspicious activity to the police without delay - if it is in progress, use the 999 system, otherwise call 0115 967 0999. Try to get as many details of the offenders and their vehicle as possible without putting yourself in danger. Write the information down,
You can inform CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You may be eligible for a cash reward of up to £1,000 if your information leads to a prosecution.
Please consider doing the following:
(1) Ensure your neighbours are aware that you are going to be away. If you are happy to do so, give them a key and ask them periodically to check that your home is in order. Ask them to pull the curtains at night and use timer switches to turn the lights on in rooms you normally occupy. Open the curtains in the morning. Make it look as though you are at home even though you are away. Leave a radio on, worked by a timer switch.
(2) If you have a burglar alarm, ensure it works correctly and arm it. Show your neighbour how it works as well, so they can use it. If you haven't got one, consider getting one. It's the best thing to deter burglars. You may also make a saving on your contents premium with your Insurer.
(3) Leave contact details with your neighbour, just in case they need to contact you.
(4) Cancel deliveries before you go away, and ask you neighbour to collect any mail or circulars that may be left at your address.
(5) Put away and secure any garden tools or implements, including ladders that could be used to force entry.
(6) Make sure that your valuable items are either postcoded with a UV marker pen or Smartwatered so they are traceable if recovered by the police. Display window stickers to this effect. These have a slight deterrent value.
(7) Join a Neighbourhood Watch if there is one in your area, or consider forming one. It's free and the police will help you set it up and run the inaugural meeting.
(8) If you see anything suspicious happening, ring 999. Otherwise use the non-emergency number
0115 967 0999.
