Debbie and I have recently had the pleasure of the visiting the South Notts Group of the RDA and of successfully bidding for Borough Council cash to help with buying equipment.
The RDA is a registered charity run by volunteers, and it provides opportunities for less-abled and mentally and physically challenged people (mainly children) to enjoy riding a horse while under supervision and in safe surroundings.
In Keyworth, the RDA operates from the Lings Lane stables on the south side of the village. A number of horses and ponies (chosen for their gentle character and compatibility with children) have been selected by the RDA. The human volunteers and helpers all contribute to the very labour-intensive business of looking after the horses, supervising the children, and providing a safe riding experience in a secure paddock.
We were very impressed with the high level of organisation and the commitment of the volunteers. They all care deeply about horses and children. The children love it, and even the horses don't seem to mind! It is clear that the children, who come with a range of challenging conditions, benefit from the therapeutic effect of the ride. The horses are making a genuine contribution to the well-being of the children and helping them to deal with their problems.
What can you do?
You are welcome to visit the RDA at Lings Lane on Wednesday mornings in term time (good idea to phone 0845 450 6819 before you go). Take some cash - it won't be refused! If you are good with horses and children, offer your services. And visit www.rda.org.uk to find out more.
