Stray dogs - new arrangements

A change in national legislation means that local authorities alone are responsible for dealing with lost or stray dogs from 6 April 2008, ending the current arrangement under which the police and councils shared this task.  After this date, the police will not accept stray dogs at any police stations or take notifications of lost dogs.

The police will continue to be responsible for taking action over dangerous dogs and the theft of dogs.

To report a stray dog in the Rushcliffe Borough council area, a member of the public should ring the usual council call-centre number 0115 981 9911 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday. Outside these hours, there is an emergency number 0115 981 1143. This number goes through to a call centre who will contact the dog warden if it is appropriate to do so.
