Keeping your bin clean
- try mothballs

A year ago I reported on problems in keeping grey wheelie-bins clean and maggot-free during hot weather, and I asked for any tips in achieving this. So far this year, the weather has not been too much of a problem in encouraging infestations in rubbish. However, I have heard that mothballs may be effective in deterring maggots. During the last few weeks while I have been putting mothballs in my bin, there have been no maggots. The pungent smell of naphthalene might be putting them off.

Older readers will remember mothballs from their parents' wardrobes. These days, it is harder to find them in the shops, though you can get them from Storey's hardware shop in Keyworth (£1.50 for a pack of 24 balls). Put one mothball in the bin after each emptying.

Could I also take this opportunity to remind you to wrap all food waste (preferably in bags without holes) and to clean the bin after each emptying.
