Appeal about the Wrights Garage
site in Selby Lane
A few months ago, the property developers William Davis, in conjunction with Rushcliffe Homes, submitted a planning application for blocks of flats, totalling 48 apartments, to be built on the site of Wrights Garage in Selby Lane, Keyworth. Despite the recommendation of the Borough Council's planning officers, the application was refused by the Development Control Committee. After a period of consultation and reflection, William Davis have decided to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. This process will probably take the rest of 2007, and it is not known at present whether there will be an inquiry or whether the appeal will be conducted via written evidence.
Regular readers and Keyworth residents will be aware that this new development was partly intended as a replacement for the old people's sheltered accommodation at Debdale House. The delay over Selby Lane, together with the redevelopment plans for the Debdale House site, has compelled Rushcliffe Homes to make hurried plans for relocating the remaining 12 residents. They are being offered accommodation in other properties (mostly outside Keyworth) or are going to live with or near relatives. This outcome has caused a good deal of distress for the elderly residents and is most regrettable. Surely Rushcliffe Homes and the Borough Council could have seen the problem coming and could have moved the welfare of residents to the top of their priority list.
