I have previously informed readers about the Borough Council's long-term vision to rationalise leisure centres in Rushcliffe. This is documented on the Council's website at www.rushcliffe.gov.uk/leisurestrategy
and the relevant part says:
"This vision is centred upon creating three well-invested main facilities, one of which will be a totally new 'flagship' centre serving the central part of the borough. The other two main facilities will also benefit from major investment. One will serve the western part of the borough from East Leake and the other will serve the eastern area from a site still to be confirmed."
Clearly Keyworth Leisure Centre does not fit into this vision. At the Parish Council meeting on 16 April, the Borough Council's Leisure Services Manager explained the strategy and answered questions from councillors. He refused to give any assurance about the continued existence of Keyworth Leisure Centre and explained only that its operation under the private management of Parkwood Leisure is provisionally guaranteed for only 5 years. This period might be longer, or it could even be shorter if the County Council give notice to quit from the Joint Use agreement.
What can you do? Support your local leisure centre and swimming pool. Use it or lose it! Join the Friends of KLC, a support group being coordinated by local resident Ian Machan. Mail friendsof.klc@googlemail.com to offer your support and ask to be put on the mailing list. Don't wait until the closure order is given in a few years' time.
